Gneiss

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Bottom is not seen.

Upper contact

Top is in conformable contact with Kawabulak Gr (it is also termed Jianshanzi Gr).

Regional extent

Eastern Middle Tianshan. It is exposed in Xingxingxia, Jianshanzi, and Kalatag south of Hami City, Kawabulak and Kumux south of Shanshan County. Among these areas it is more seriously metamorphosed in Xingxing Gorge and Kumux, where most rocks were metamorphosed into a migmatite level.

Age

The gneiss is dated by U-Pb (whole-rock) at 1400 ±73 Ma and by Pb-Pb isochron at 1311.9 Ma. However, SHRIMP U-Pb dates of 1436 ±13 Ma and 1405.2 ±7.8 Ma are acquired from the granodioritte gneiss in the Xingxingxia Fm (Hu Aiqing et al., 2006). Shown on schematic stratigraphic column as spanning the Changchengian (Statherian); but dates imply middle Jixian => put as lower to middle Jixianian (Calymmian) here.
